Wrongful Termination

Taking a Stand Against Workplace Discrimination

Since the passage of the federal Civil Rights of 1964, workplace discrimination has been illegal in this country. Yet every year, thousands of employees in California and throughout the nation suffer discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or age.

Record-Setting $1.14 Million Racial Discrimination Verdict

The attorneys of Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, have taken a strong stand against discrimination of all kinds. In fact, we won the largest racial discrimination verdict in Orange County history on behalf of an African-American client, a surgeon, who was terminated after purchasing a home in his employer's neighborhood. His employer did not want to live in an integrated community.

Elements of a Discrimination Claim

To file an employment discrimination claim, you must belong to a protected class — a minority group that is protected by civil rights law. Only people age 40 and older may claim discrimination based on age, for example. Additionally, the discrimination must have occurred because of your membership in the protected class.

Discrimination can take many forms. The law protects employees and job seekers from discrimination in hiring, firing, transfer, promotion, pay, training and advancement and other work-related opportunities.

We often represent clients whose employers retaliated against them for complaining about workplace discrimination. For example, we settled a discrimination lawsuit against Hewlett Packard for $1 million for a client who was fired after complaining about racial discrimination and sexual harassment.

Unruh Civil Rights Act

We also represent people in who have been discriminated against in by business establishments under the California Unruh Civil Rights Act. This act protects people from discrimination in housing and public accommodations, such as restaurants, theaters, hospitals, hotels and other establishments.

If you believe you have been the victim of illegal discrimination or if you are a referring attorney seeking a skilled group of trial lawyers, please contact Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP. [ Impact to Change ]

Much of our firm's work involves taking on large corporations, insurance companies and government agencies. By and large, these entities oppose change and will expend seemingly unlimited resources to preserve the status quo. At GB&W, we relish taking on this level of opposition. Through our many years of practice, our personal injury lawyers and staff have achieved unparalleled success in trial and other forums against these opponents. Taking on these companies serves a dual purpose. First, our efforts help our clients recover the compensation they need to move forward after a life-changing injury. Secondly, our work makes communities safer places to live. In this way, everyone can benefit from our work. [ more » ]
