Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Paralysis

An injury to the neck or spine can result in immediate and permanent paralysis below the site of the injury. The attorneys of Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, have successfully represented numerous people with spinal cord injuries caused by the negligence of others.

Spinal cord injuries are typically caused by a traumatic accident like a car wreck or a fall that results in the breaking or dislocating of a vertebra, one of the bones that surround and protect the spinal cord.

Most spinal cord injuries do no completely sever the spinal cord. Instead, they cause enough damage to partially or totally impair the ability of the spinal cord to send messages between the brain and other parts of the body. When this ability is totally impaired, paralysis is the result.

Paralysis, Neck and Back Injuries

Injuries to the neck, or cervical spine, often result in quadriplegia, the loss of feeling and function from the neck down. If the injury site is high enough, the injured person may require a ventilator or pacemaker. The exact site of the injury will determine whether the person has any function in his or her hands, wrists, shoulders or arms. Injuries to the thoracic nerves of the upper back can sometimes result in paraplegia, the loss of sensation and motor function from the waist down.

People who are paralyzed because of spinal cord injuries have more reason than ever to believe a cure for this devastating condition may one day be achieved, thanks to advances in research and technology.

Impact to Change

Much of our firm's work involves taking on large corporations, insurance companies and government agencies. By and large, these entities oppose change and will expend seemingly unlimited resources to preserve the status quo. At GB&W, we relish taking on this level of opposition. Through our many years of practice, our personal injury lawyers and staff have achieved unparalleled success in trial and other forums against these opponents. Taking on these companies serves a dual purpose. First, our efforts help our clients recover the compensation they need to move forward after a life-changing injury. Secondly, our work makes communities safer places to live. In this way, everyone can benefit from our work.
