Personality Changes

Closed Head Injury and Personality Change

One of the most insidious symptoms of traumatic brain injury is the personality change it can cause.

People who sustain a brain injury are usually unaware of these changes. That is why the family members, co-workers and others who knew a person before and after an injury can be so important to identifying these symptoms and helping the person get the help he or she needs.

Common Personality Changes

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, common personality changes in people with brain injuries can include:

  • Being quick to anger
  • Irritability and impatience
  • Reduced tolerance for stress
  • Lack of initiative, apathy
  • Dependence (failure to assume responsibility for one's actions)
  • Denial of disability
  • Lack of inhibition (may result in aggression, cursing and inappropriate sexual behavior)
  • Inflexibility
  • Flattened or heightened emotional responses/reactions

The attorneys of Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, understand that brain injuries can cause significant cognitive, emotional and personality changes without ever showing evidence of injury on an MRI or CT scan. These personality changes can impair one's ability to return to a former occupation or to learn skills necessary to obtain or hold a different type of job.

Personality changes and the difficulties they cause are part of the damages caused by a traumatic brain injury. Our attorneys are effective at documenting the extent of these damages and securing full compensation for our clients.

Before and After the Injury

Often we will interview friends, family members and co-workers and ask them to describe the person they knew before and after the injury occurred. Such testimony helps juries better understand the profound impact a brain injury has had on the person's life.

Our lawyers represent people who sustained brain injuries in accidents caused by negligence in the Los Angeles area and throughout Southern California. To discuss your case, please contact our office in Santa Monica.
