New research may help minimize damage of brain injury

The devastation that can be experienced when someone suffers a brain injury can be traumatic. From memory loss to serious physical disabilities, the consequences of a brain injury can last for the rest of a person's life. Research in California and internationally is always attempting to repair or minimize the effects of brain trauma and recent studies may show some advancement.

Doctors are attempting to show that a female hormone called progesterone can treat brain injuries. It is thought that the hormone may protect the brain by reducing swelling and improving mental recovery after a person suffers trauma. However, the progesterone infusion must be given to a victim within eight hours of an accident in order for it to be effective.

The trial is now testing the new approach in five hospitals and results will be available in the next two or three years. It is widely believed that women recover from brain injuries better than men, so doctors hope that the hormone will have a positive effect. A recent study involving 100 patients in the U.S. showed positive results.

The fact that there may be a way to minimize the damage experienced in a brain injury is very positive. All too often, a person suffers brain damage as a result of another person's negligence. In these cases, it is important to hold the guilty or reckless party responsible for the harm they have caused. This may be especially true for victims who will need long-term care to treat an injury.
