Suit filed in Los Angeles after officer dies during funeral procession

Approximately ten months ago, a motorcycle officer lost his life during a funeral procession. Some may call the circumstances of a death at a funeral ironic, but the wife of the officer who lost his life calls it a wrongful death. She filed a suit this month in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that the man who collided with the deceased officer was "unfit" for his job, which resulted from inadequate training and supervision.

The accident occurred on May 26, 2011 in Torrance, California. The deceased officer had been riding a motorcycle in a funeral procession. Another officer collided with the widow's husband, leading to injuries that caused his death.

The wife first took action by filing claims against the two beach cities involved in planning the procession. Now, she has filed a wrongful death lawsuit along with her two sons that claims that not only was the man who caused the accident responsible, but that El Segundo police officers were negligent in the way that they hired the responsible officer and retaining his employment.

Approximately $25 million dollars in damages are being sought in the lawsuit. These damages are to cover the losses that the widow and her sons faced as a result of the officer's death. The damages are to compensate them for the loss of love, affection, companionship and support once provided by their husband and father. Other damages were also sought but unspecified. These could be for financial damages such as lost income or funeral costs.
