Teen Dies in Distracted Driving Car Accident While Facebooking

In our last post we discussed the dangers of distracted driving in the context of teens with ADHD. Teens with ADHD are more likely to drive while distracted and are up to four times more likely to be in a car accident than drivers without ADHD.

Teens are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents in general, and the problem of distracted driving is not exclusive to teens with ADHD. Texting while driving is a national safety crisis, and many parents have found that teens will continue to text while driving despite knowing the dangers of the practice.

Two parents who lost a teen in a texting-while-driving accident have become safety advocates in their home state of Idaho. The parents lost their daughter in a truck accident which happened because she was posting to Facebook from her phone.

Ironically, the teen texted about the dangers of texting and driving seconds before she slammed into a tanker truck at 80 miles per hour.

"I can't discuss this now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha," the girl wrote.

"I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably tired," the girl's father said, adding that she was driving home from college at the time of the crash. "But that's not a reason to do it, and the kids think they're invincible. To them, texting is not distracting, they're so proficient at texting, that they don't feel it's distracted driving."
