California Limo Fire: Tragedy Strikes Bachelorette Party

According to the driver of a limo that killed five women enjoying a bachelorette party, the limo burst into flames a mere 90 seconds after a passenger alerted him to smoke. The driver pulled the limo over on the San Mateo Bridge (which crosses the San Francisco Bay) and was able to escape with four of the women, but the others were trapped inside the back of the limo.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fire but the cause remains unclear. The limo was not involved in an auto accident and the CHP does not believe criminal behavior caused the fire. Investigators are attempting to determine whether the fire began inside the car or outside, which could indicate whether the fire was caused by an auto defect.

The company that operates the limo, Limo Stop, has said it “will do everything possible to investigate and assist authorities in determining the cause of this fire in order to bring forth answers and provide closure to (the) victims and their families.”

If the fire was caused by improper maintenance of the limo, Limo Stop may be held accountable for the injuries and deaths. If, however, the accident was caused by an auto defect, then the limo manufacturer or manufacturers of the defective auto parts may be financially liable.

Whatever the cause of the limo fire, our hearts go out to the families of those who were killed and injured in this tragic accident. The women involved in the accident were nurses, celebrating the marriage and vow renewal of their 31-year-old friend. As the mother of one of the injured women put it, “This was supposed to be such a happy day.”
