Glendale Scooter Accident Critically Injures Boy

A 10-year-old Glendale resident was critically injured when he fell off his scooter and hit his head last week. The boy was not wearing his helmet and the force of the impact centered on his head.

Paramedics took him to Los Angeles County's USC Medical Center where he was induced into a coma. While he is in stable condition, it is yet unknown how serious his brain injuries are or how they will affect his future.

Scooter accidents are common, especially during the summer months when children are out of school and riding scooters and bikes on the streets. Many children do not wear helmets and suffer head injuries as a result. As children, they simply do not understand the risk. It is up to their parents to make sure they ride safely, from wearing helmets to staying out of the streets.

Of course, many scooter accidents are not caused by the children riding the scooters. They may also be caused by:

  • Distracted drivers: We have frequently discussed the dangers of distracted driving on this blog. One of the biggest dangers of distracted driving occurs when drivers fail to see children playing in the streets because they are looking down at their phones, changing the radio station or fixing their hair.
  • Other drivers: Drunk drivers, drivers who are speeding and other reckless and negligent drivers also cause scooter accidents.
  • Scooter defects: A scooter accident can occur if the scooter itself is defective.

When a scooter accident is caused by negligent or reckless driving, the driver can be held accountable through a personal injury lawsuit. In scooter defect cases, the manufacturer of the scooter or scooter part can be held accountable through a product liability lawsuit. In any case, it is important to seek compensation for your child's physical injuries and emotional suffering.
