Child dies at car competition

A tragic accident at a car competition in Santa Fe Springs, California, has left a 7-year-old girl dead after she was struck by a vehicle. Initial reports indicate that a negligent driver likely lost control of his vehicle, striking the girl with his car at the warehouse. The event was held to demonstrate "car hopping," a competition in which drivers show off their low-rider cars that have been modified to include hydraulics that make the vehicles jump up and down. The competition was held at a warehouse owned by CBM Hydros.

Authorities report the child had been a spectator at the event when she was struck by the vehicle. It is not clear whether the owner of the vehicle was actually competing in the event, or if he had simply arrived to show off his car as a viewer, as well. The accident occurred on Sept. 22 during the evening hours at the warehouse, which is about 14 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Witnesses at the scene gave some conflicting reports, initially telling officers that the child was struck by a pallet that had become dislodged when the vehicle bumped into a shelf. Now, it appears as though the driver struck the child with his car. Family members are clearly distraught about the loss of their young relative, and the community is rallying around the victims to show their support. Low-rider shops and participants are working to collect funds for the child's family.

Even with the support of community, however, the family could find it difficult to pay for expenses related to the child's death. Victims such as the relatives in this case can struggle to pay for burial and funeral services, along with outstanding medical bills. In addition, they can suffer serious emotional damage because of this incident. Civil cases against the negligent driver and sponsor of the low-riding event could provide financial relief for the relatives of the young decedent.
