Girl injured in Ontario hit-and-run car accident

A San Bernardino County girl was hospitalized yesterday afternoon after a hit-and-run car accident.

Authorities say that the crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of California Street and Plum Avenue in Ontario.

The Ontario Police Department told CBS Los Angeles that they found a 9-year-old girl lying between the street and the sidewalk and that she was taken to a hospital non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are still looking for the driver who ran over the girl. They believe the driver was a Hispanic female in her 30s who was driving a white midsized sedan. The car is believed to be an older model and have damage to its front passenger-side.

Pedestrian safety is an issue throughout Southern California. Many pedestrian safety advocates accuse authorities of a "blame the victim" approach to pedestrian accidents. Recently, the New York Time wrote an article about the LAPD's new efforts to ticket jaywalking pedestrians in downtown Los Angeles.

Last Tuesday, a car carrying Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti hit a pedestrian downtown. The woman was hospitalized for three days but a hospital spokesperson described the woman's injuries as minor.
