Mother Files $100 Million Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Orland FedEx Crash

The mother of a Los Angeles County student recently sued FedEx in connection with a deadly Orland highway accident last month.

The lawsuit claims that Jennifer Bonilla, a Dorsey High School senior, was killed when a FedEx truck crossed the centerline of 5 Freeway and crashed into a charter bus carrying LA-area students en route to a college tour.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the mother seeks $100 million in damages, claiming that FedEx trucks have a history of catching fire and that the charter bus had deficient safety equipment.

Ten people died in the crash and dozens of more were injured in the crash. There are conflicting reports as to whether the FedEx truck was on fire before the accident happened. At least one driver says that she saw flames coming from the truck before the accident, but a NHTSA investigator could not verify this eyewitness account.

"We remain focused on providing support to those affected and cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation," a FedEx spokesperson told reporters.

The crash is still under investigation and it could be months before the cause of the accident is determined.
