CPSC Releases Report on Dangerous Nursery Products

When parents buy nursery-related products (cribs, playpens, strollers, baby gates) for their children, they trust that those products are safe and will make their children's lives better. Unfortunately, every year tens of thousands of children are harmed, and hundreds of children are killed, in incidents associated with nursery products.

A recent report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) titled "Injuries and Deaths Associated with Nursery Products Among Children Younger than Age Five" reveals the following facts:

Deaths

  • An average of 112 deaths of children younger than five are associated with, although not necessarily directly caused by, nursery products each year.
  • Some of the most prevalent causes of nursery product-related deaths include strangulation, asphyxia (oxygen deprivation/suffocation) and drowning.
  • Products most often involved in fatal situations include cribs and mattresses (41%), bassinets and cradles (19%), and playpens (12%).

Injuries

  • As recently as 2013, nearly 75,000 nursery product-related injuries were seen in emergency rooms throughout the United States. This figure accounts only for the injuries where parents actually brought their children to the hospital, so the actual figure is likely higher.
  • Falls were the most common cause of injuries in instances where a nursery product was a contributing factor.
  • More than two-thirds of all injuries associated with nursery products were to the face and head.
  • The products responsible for the highest number of injuries were car sear carriers, cribs and mattresses, strollers, and high chairs. Each of these resulted in more than 10,000 injuries. Collectively, these products accounted for nearly two-thirds of all nursery product-related injuries.

If you have young children, be vigilant about checking the CPSC's recall page and other resources that can alert you to potentially dangerous products.
