Treating a spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injuries can leave California residents completely incapacitated and unable to care for themselves. In the severest of cases, an individual with an injured spine will require respirators and round-the-clock assistance to stay alive. However, even in less severe cases, victims can suffer mobility problems that prevent them from being able to work or navigate the world by themselves.

Modern medical advancements are changing the way doctors treat spinal cord injuries every single year. New advancements are helping patients achieve miraculous results on the road to recovery; however, here are certain things that remain impossible to achieve and the severest spinal cord injuries that lead to permanent paralysis will generally never fully heal.

When it comes to treating such an injury, though, doctors will first address issues that could be life-threatening, while trying to resolve any problems that could lead to the worsening of long-term conditions.

In certain spinal cord injury cases, doctors may try to use drugs like dexamethasone (Decadron) and ormethylprednisolone (Medrol). These are corticosteroid drugs, which can be very helpful in reducing swelling relating to the injury while it heals. By reducing swelling, pressure can be reduced on certain nerves to makes sure that the swelling does not worsen the extent of nerve damage to the spinal cord. Sometimes, surgery may also be used to correct misaligned vertebrae.

Generally, a strict regime of bed rest will also be required as the spine slowly heals itself. Physical therapy, rehabilitation therapy and occupational therapy may also be necessary to help victims recover. In some cases, victims will also need specialized occupational therapy to learn how to navigate the world with a disability.

These medical treatments and services are extremely costly. Generally, the costs associated with medical treatments and services are included in personal injury claims related to spinal cord damages.
