Burn injuries and personal injury claims

Serious burns are some of the most painful injuries that anyone can have. In addition to being painful, severe burns are dangerous due to the threat of difficult-to-resolve infections. Although many burn victims can overcome and heal with proper medical care, the injury will usually leave behind disfiguring scars and painful nerve damage.

Recovery following a burn injury largely depends on the severity of the burn. Here's how burns are categorized according to severity:

-- First-degree: A first-degree burn is the least serious. They involve burns that only injury the epidermis, or the outermost layer of skin. First-degree burns tend to result in pain and reddening of the affected areas.

-- Second-degree: A second-degree burn goes down to a deeper layer of skin, affecting both the epidermis and dermis. Redness, swelling, pain and blistering are common in second-degree burns.

-- Third-degree: A third-degree burn goes all the way through the skin to affect deeper bodily tissues. These burns can cause blackened or white skin, as well as charred skin that becomes numb.

All of the above categories of burns can result in a severe infection if they're not treated appropriately. Home first aid could be enough for a first-degree burn, but patients are well-advised to visit a doctor to check up on a burn injury regardless what degree of severity it is.

Burn injuries can happen in a car accident, a work-related accident, in a home fire and in many other ways. If you have suffered a burn injury in California, your medical care is likely costly and you may be wondering how you'll pay your doctor's bills. This is where a personal injury lawsuit may be able to help. If your burn injury was the result of another party's negligence or unlawful activity, then you may have a viable claim for damages to pursue.
